The benefits of Microsoft buying Yahoo sound good in theory - reduced costs, bigger advertiser base, etc. But this deal isn’t likely to be good for Microsoft’s shareholders (stock dropped 6% today). It’s more likely to benefit Google.
I’m still confident that Google’s going to wipe the floor with Microsoft/Yahoo. And the beatdown […]

SEMs have been bashing wikipedia for years, but the trend has picked up steam in the last 6 months or so. Eric’ Lander’s article at SEJ is the latest.
I click on Wikipedia SERPs at least a few times weekly. 95% of the time, I’m very satisfied with the article. I’m in the […]

A while ago, Rae Hoffman posted a thought-provoking piece about behind-the-scenes link purchases, and how they are impossible for Google to detect. I agree for the most part. For now it’s hard for Google to combat discreet link-buying/selling.
But Google has a LOT of ways they could potentially find these purchases; search history, Webmaster […]

Offering free widgets to webmasters is hands down one of the most effective link-building strategies. It’s a win-win situation: Sites that use the widget get a useful tool with no development cost, and the widget-builder gets links & traffic to their site. Here are my top five link-generating widgets:
#1 - StatCounter.com is […]

At first I was a little pissed-off when I saw people giving Calacanis the attention, linkbait gratification, and press that he is not-so-subtly seeking for Mahalo.com.
But I’ve come to the realization that it doesn’t matter how much free publicity Mahalo gets. It’s a flawed concept, and it’s not going to work. […]

I noticed some redirect weirdness in Google this morning. Check out the #2 result for “google technorati”. It looks kinda like the old 302 problem, but isn’t really a hijack.
I’ll get a screenshot up shortly, having problems with my wordpress template…

I found a neat Firefox extension that saves and crops screenshots. It’s called Snapper, and it’s saving my non-image-editing butt some time. Just right-click and select “start snapping”, then drag the box over the portion of the page you want a screenshot of - voila! It’ll save to your default location, which you can […]

Google is testing new background colors for Adwords, nothing new there. What’s interesting is how they’re doing it. All my queries from Firefox are getting new yellow Adwords backgrounds, while IE searches are getting traditional blue backgrounds. I tested ~20 different keywords, alternating the browser every time. The results were consistent: […]

Gord Hotchkiss has forced me to re-think personalized search with his recent interview of Matt Cutts. I suddenly realized that I’ve been seriously underestimating the importance that personalization will play in SEM.
Personalized search isn’t just Google learning your interests and using them to improve search results. That part is definitely cool. […]
